Joel R. Sevinsky

CEO & Founder

Joel founded Theiagen Genomics in 2019 with a conviction that public health could not wait for genomics to mature on its own - it needed to be built, deployed, and made operational now. He brought more than two decades of experience in systems biology and bioinformatics to that mission, along with three years leading next-generation sequencing initiatives at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, where he helped build genomic capacity at the state, regional, and national levels. Today Theiagen works with more than four dozen public health laboratories across the U.S. and over a dozen internationally across Africa and Asia. Joel holds a Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from CU Boulder and a B.A. in Microbiology from UC Santa Barbara.

Gregory S. Legacki

Chief Operating Officer

Greg brings more than three decades of operational and financial leadership to Theiagen - and a track record of making complex organizations run better. Before joining Theiagen in 2021, he held senior roles at Verizon, where he managed $50M capital portfolios, drove a 90% reduction in audit findings, and enabled $9M in new revenue through cross-functional collaboration. Earlier in his career, he built and led businesses from the ground up, including securing first-round funding for an early data center venture. At Theiagen, Greg translates scientific ambition into operational reality - ensuring the company’s vision is matched by the infrastructure, processes, and discipline to deliver on it. He holds a B.S. in Economics with a specialization in Accounting from Cornell University.

Kathryn Klement, PHR

Head of People

Kathryn serves as Head of People at Theiagen Genomics, where she leads the company’s people strategy with a thoughtful, people-first approach. She oversees talent acquisition, employee engagement, performance management, total rewards, and people programs that foster an inclusive, high-performing culture. With nearly a decade of Human Resources experience, Kathryn has a proven track record of building and supporting high-performing remote teams while designing programs that promote employee well-being, and organizational success. She is passionate about creating an environment where employees feel valued, empowered, and equipped to do their best work while advancing Theiagen’s mission to improve public health.

Andrew Lang

Head of Engineering & Innovation

Andrew leads engineering for the workflow systems and technical foundations behind Theiagen's pathogen genomics work. He sets technical direction and architecture for a team that turns scientific requirements into maintainable infrastructure, automation, and data systems — moving pathogen genomic data from raw sequence to actionable insight. Shaped by more than a decade of military leadership, he brings a bias toward clear direction and disciplined execution, building resilient infrastructure and a capable team in service of a public health mission where getting the details right matters.

Team expertise

Theiagen Genomics was built by scientists and engineers who have worked inside laboratories, agencies, and research institutions facing the hardest pathogen genomics challenges.

Our team includes alumni of the CDC Enteric Diseases Laboratory Branch, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Virginia’s Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services, and Oxford University - with hands-on expertise in whole-genome sequencing (WGS), PulseNet surveillance, foodborne outbreak investigation, phylogenetic analysis, and CLIA-compliant pipeline validation across enteric pathogens including Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, Campylobacter, and carbapenem-resistant organisms. Quality operations are led by an ASQ-certified Manager of Quality and Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE).

Our bioinformatics engineering team builds and maintains Docker-containerized pipelines, open-source WGS tools, and cloud-native workflows on the Terra platform that make genomic surveillance deliverable at scale - with contributions to GISAID, SRA, and GenBank and postdoctoral-level research in bacterial pathogen adaptation and transposon-mediated genome plasticity.
